The custom of swimming for the cross (honor cross, Epiphany cross) in open waters on the holiday of the Epiphany, which marks the day of Christ’s baptism. The custom practice involves swimming in the early morning hours, most often in rivers, with the goal of swimming to the cross in the water. The cross is usually placed at a distance of 33 meters from the bank, which symbolizes the years of Christ’s life. It was believed that the one who bathes in the cold river will be healthy and prosperous throughout the year.
